Contest Details & How to Apply

* Students' introductions or the presentation videos must be submitted by their teachers. You can apply if there are 3 or more students entering the contest.

* Please apply for one category only - either the writing or the presentation category.

WRITING CATEGORY

· For Teachers

Step 1: Download the application forms for teachers and students below
Step 2: Hand out the application form to your students, so that they can fill in the introduction.
Step 3: Submit the application forms by mail to our company.

· For Students

Step 1: Read one of the selected Marvel Readers listed below
Step 2: Write an introduction in approximately 100 words in the application form provided by the teacher.

Step 1: Please record (or collect) the students' presentations of one of the selected Marvel titles (in English) as a video. Step 2: Submit the video via the application form below.

* Allowed video formats are AVI, FLV and MP4. The maximum allowed file size is 200MB.

Step 2: Whilst showing the cover of the book to the camera, film a one minute presentation about what you like about the book or why you recommend the book.

The Juror

Thomas Robb

Thomas Robb recently retired from the Faculty of Foreign Studies at Kyoto Sangyo University and now divides his time between activities for the Extensive Reading Foundation, of which he is the Chair, and editing TESL-EJ, an electronic journal for language teachers. He is the second President of JALT, and then its Executive Secretary until 1990, and has been active in many academic societies. His main focus is how to use technology to improve language learning. He is the designer of the two software apps mentioned in the article, MReader and Peereval. In 2017, he was honored with the "Milne Innovation Award" for his contributions to Extensive Reading" by the Extensive Reading Foundation.

Qualifications for entering

  • Persons who agree to this terms of use
  • Persons resident in Japan.
  • Persons whose native or first language is not English.

Important points and conditions to note before entering

  • Works submitted will be judged strictly and award-winning works will be awarded with the grand prize and other awards. The full name, the name of the school and the academic year of entrants whose works are chosen as award-winners will be published in the following ways:
    1. Posted on the official website of Pearson Japan (henceforth referred to as "the company") (www.pearson.co.jp) and on the company's official Facebook page (www.facebook.com/PearsonJapan/").
    2. Published in the Pearson Reader Catalog (2019-2020) issued by the company (the company may, at its discretion, choose excerpts from submitted videos to feature as award-winning works in the Presentation section).
    3. Published in other promotional material issued by the company.
  • Entrants will not be notified if their entries are accepted.
  • Entries cannot be withdrawn after submission.
  • Entrants must ensure that their submissions do not infringe on the copyright or other rights of third parties. If a copyright infringement claim or other complaint is received from a third party, the entrant shall bear full responsibility and the company shall be absolved of any responsibility.
  • If a submission is found to have infringed on third party copyright or committed any other illegal act, its selection as an award-winning work will be withdrawn.
  • Awards given to award-winning works will be sent to the address entered when the entry is submitted. If the company cannot contact the entrant due to an error in the address or a change after submission, the award may be withdrawn, or the entrant may be considered to have forfeited their right to receive the award.
  • If an entry by a minor is shortlisted for an award, the company will send the guardians (here and hereafter meaning legal representative) of said minor documents requesting their consent to the agreement of said minor to these Terms & Conditions. If the documents are not returned, the shortlisting of said minor's entry will be withdrawn.

Handling of personal information

Personal information obtained from entries will be used within the scope of the following purposes of use.

  1. Managing submitted entries
  2. Publicizing award-winning works, etc. in the ways listed above.
