These two new levels support beginning students by providing the scaffolding to construct a strong linguistic core and prepare students for the complexity and challenge of the upper levels. There are two strands to these levels: Reading & Writing and Listening & Speaking.



Intermediate to High-Intermediate ~ Transition

There are 3 levels for Intermediate to high level students, Intermediate to High-Intermediate, Advanced, Transition levels.

For these levels, there are three-strand (reading, writing, oral communication) academic skills series designed to equip English learners with the reading, writing, and oral communication skills necessary to succeed in courses in an English-speaking university setting and grammar.

University Success Writing builds skills tied to specific learning outcomes with a strong focus on inquiry-based research writing to prepare students to write in academic degree classes. Interviews with Stanford processors discussing their own writing processes.

With University Success Writing students will:

  • Write and succeed with the types of writing required in academic fields
  • Build essential skills for research-based writing
  • Develop skills to organize, research, and write about challenging academic topics
  • Propose and produce authentic research
  • Apprehend college culture

University Success Oral Communication builds skills tied to specific learning outcomes that prepare students to understand and process lengthy academic lectures, defend their ideas, present concepts, and speak thoughtfully in discussions. Authentic 20-30 minute lectures delivered by Stanford University professors.

With University Success Oral Communication students will:

  • Develop essential skills to process long, linguistically complex academic lectures
  • Recognize and use generalizations, digressions, asides, and rhetorical devices
  • Use techniques to effectively deliver academic presentations
  • Practice skills for successful communication in academic settings
  • Apprehend college culture



The University Success series has been expanded with the Beginning and High-Beginning levels. These two new levels support beginning students by providing the scaffolding to construct a strong linguistic core and prepare students for the complexity and challenge of the upper levels. There are two strands to University Success A1, A2: Reading & Writing and Listening & Speaking.
